Tell No One
Directed by: Guillaume Canet
Starring: Francois Cluzet, Kristin Scott Thomas, Jean Rochefort
Synopsis:
Alex Beck, pediatrician, still mourns the murder of his wife 8 years previously, for which he was initially a prime suspect. As two bodies are discovered near where he and his wife had been attacked, strange clues and events arise that make the police once more target Alex, while Alex begins to wonder if his wife is dead after all...
Review:
On the face of this, director Guillaume Canet is definitely someone to watch out for. He has taken a novel by Harlan Coben, re-set it in and around Paris and inserted his own passion for horses into the plot. The result is a complex thriller which gives you the clues like jigsaw pieces and hardly gives you or the characters time to piece it all together. By the end of the movie you will have a good idea of what has actually occurred, and it is in the final moments that the movie finally relents and allows you to catch up.
Nothing is spoon-fed here. The movie makes you join the dots to the previous scene whilst trying to understand what is going on right now. This isn't made easy for those following the subtitles! There is only one element which is telegraphed in advance, and that is to do with the character Bruno (not a spoiler).
The cast is superb - old hands like Jean Rochefort who give pathos and weight to the story, while Francois Cluzet is masterful as the driven doctor still in love with this wife. Most surprising was seeing Kristin Scott Thomas, speaking fluent french and holding her own in another language.
Verdict:
For those not averse to subtitles, and want a good brain teaser as well as a top notch, hitchcock style thriller, this is highly recommended.
