Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem (18)

Directed by: Colin and Greg Straus

Starring: Steven Pasquale, Reiko Aylesworth, John Ortiz

Synopsis: Carrying on from where “AVP” left off, the Predators’ spaceship leaves Earth, not suspecting that their fallen comrade is gestating a baby Alien, which bursts from his chest as a Predator/Alien hybrid. Chaos ensues aboard the craft, causing it to crash back on Earth, in the forest by the sleepy town of Gunnison County. Now the local populace are all in great danger, not only from the “predalien” but also a predator intent on wiping it out...

Review: A couple of years ago there was a nice creepy little movie called Slither, starring Nathan Fillion, about an alien organism taking over a small American town. This movie is the same, except using Aliens(tm) instead of, you know...regular aliens. The town has it’s requisite stock characters – the ex-con, just out of prison and wanting to forget his troubled past, the mature sheriff, the ex-con’s younger brother, always in trouble and with his eye on the unattainable girl, a couple of highschool bullies, and a female soldier who’s just come home to her husband and wary daughter. Oh and a father/son hunting duo who lay claim to firsties after an encounter with a couple of facehuggers.

This movie, even more than the previous one, is going to evoke a straight-down-the-line, “like it/loath it” response. If you enjoyed the Scream movies, and I Know What you Did, Urban Legend, Final Destination – then you will most certainly find a lot to enjoy here – lots of the aforementioned characters gettin’ killed in messy ways by either...Aliens, or Predator.

The trouble is, this is meant to be part of a canon of highly revered scifi/horror/action movies, directed by some of the modern Greats – Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher and John McTiernan (Hey! He gave us Die Hard! And 13th Warrior! Show some damn respect!) And even the first part of Alien Resurrection was genius (right up to where Michael Wincott is killed off). A Movie which at best evokes teen slashers does not deserve to carry either the Alien or Predator moniker, in my opinion.

Verdict: Taken on its own merits, it’s an enjoyable, lightweight slasher-flick with aliens. However, it should be so, so, so much more...

5 out of 10 (Review by MikeOutWest)
